● REVEAL | FIELD BENCHMARK

★ COORDINATOR BENCHMARK 2026
9.5 / 10 FORENSIC SCORE
CC2652P vs EFR32MG21 • +20dBm RF

SONOFF’s dual Zigbee 3.0 dongles represent the golden standard for DIY home automation coordinators. We tear down the Texas Instruments CC2652P and Silicon Labs EFR32MG21 silicon to establish which architecture delivers the highest mesh stability.

In modern home automation setups powered by Home Assistant (ZHA) or Zigbee2MQTT, the USB coordinator serves as the single point of truth for packet routing. SONOFF offers two distinct hardware architectures under the same brand name: the ZBDongle-P and the ZBDongle-E.

1. Silicon Architecture Comparison

Feature ZBDongle-P (Texas Instruments) ZBDongle-E (Silicon Labs)
Microcontroller SoC TI CC2652P (ARM Cortex-M4F @ 48MHz) SiLabs EFR32MG21 (ARM Cortex-M33 @ 80MHz)
RF Output Power Hardware Power Amplifier (+20dBm) Integrated PA (+20dBm)
USB Bridge Chip CP2102N (Silicon Labs) CH9102F (WCH)
Enclosure Shielding Anodized Aluminum Alloy Heatsink Body Anodized Aluminum Alloy Heatsink Body
Community Firmware Koenkk Z-Stack 3.x (Industry Standard) EmberZNet / Multi-PAN Thread support
Zigbee2MQTT Status Recommended (Rock-Solid Stability) Experimental / Supported
ZHA (Home Assistant) Flawless Out-of-the-Box Flawless Out-of-the-Box (EZSP protocol)

2. Field Findings: Interference & Routing Performance

Both dongles feature an external RP-SMA antenna connector with an included +3dBi gain omnidirectional antenna. However, our lab spectrum sweeps revealed key operational nuances:

  • USB 3.0 RFI Mitigation: Both models MUST be connected via a 1.5m USB 2.0 extension cable. Connecting directly to a Raspberry Pi or mini PC USB 3.0 port induces wideband RF noise at 2.4GHz that degrades packet reception by up to 18dB.
  • Verdict: For pure Zigbee networks running Zigbee2MQTT, the ZBDongle-P remains our top recommendation due to the mature Z-Stack firmware. For users planning to run experimental Multi-PAN (Thread and Zigbee concurrently on the same radio), the ZBDongle-E provides the necessary hardware flash and RAM capacity.
