Multi-Admin Fabric Architecture
Matter Multi-Admin allows a single physical accessory (Thread or Wi-Fi) to join multiple independent smart home fabrics concurrently. Learn the exact session keys and steps to share devices seamlessly.
One of the primary architectural promises of the Matter standard is Multi-Admin: the capability for a single smart plug, light bulb, or sensor to communicate simultaneously with multiple distinct ecosystem controllers over local IPv6 without proprietary cloud accounts.
1. How Multi-Admin Operates: The Cryptographic Fabric
Each Matter platform (Apple HomeKit, Home Assistant, Google Home, SmartThings) manages its own independent Matter Fabric:
- Commissioning Mode: When an accessory is commissioned to its first fabric, it receives an Operational Certificate (Node ID + Fabric ID).
- Opening the Commissioning Window: To add a second controller, the primary admin opens an enhanced commissioning window (15-minute duration), generating a temporary 11-digit pairing code.
- Concurrent Control: Both controllers maintain independent cryptographic sessions. If one hub goes offline, the other maintains full local responsiveness.
